Spring is in full swing!
With the changes in weather and “May flowers” blooming, also comes allergy season. Dealing with seasonal allergies can be frustrating enough, but feeling like you aren’t able to take your “usual” allergy medications once you are pregnant can make it even more frustrating.
Some natural remedies for allergies, coughs, and colds include eucalyptus inhalants (or fresh Trader Joe’s eucalyptus hanging in your shower!), using a humidifier in your room at night, saline rinses/sprays (like Neil Med Sinus Rinse or Neti Pot), increasing your fluid intake, warm liquids like soup, and rest when possible.
If your nasal congestion is causing a sore throat, gargling warm salt water 3-5 times a day is usually helpful.
If these natural remedies just aren’t enough, it is ok to take Allegra, Claritin, Zyrtec or Benadryl while pregnant. For congestion it is ok to use Vicks Vapor Rub or take Mucinex, Sudafed, or Tylenol cough/cold/sinus formulas. *Please do not take Sudafed if you have hypertension*.
Lastly, it is ok to use throat lozenges/cough drops or take Cepacol, Cepastat, or Dimetapp if you have a cough.
In the event that NONE of these natural and over the counter options are helping or if your mucus starts to change from clear to a green or yellow color, please come into the office so we can treat you appropriately!
